About LIAS

We bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world actuarial practice, delivering education that is industry-aligned, globally recognised and commercially relevant.

Our Story

LIAS was established to address the growing disconnect between traditional academic training and the practical demands of the modern actuarial profession. Our founding vision is to create a purpose-built institute that not only delivers a curriculum aligned with the IFoA but also immerses students in the real-world challenges actuaries face today. We believe actuaries should be more than technically competent — they should be commercially aware, agile in applying modelling techniques, confident in regulatory contexts, and capable of engaging with diverse stakeholders across the financial services landscape.

Aligning Education with Industry

At LIAS, our connection with the actuarial profession goes beyond curriculum design. We actively partner with insurers, reinsurers, consultancies, and regulatory professionals to ensure our programmes reflect real-world demands. Industry input shapes our course content, informs case studies, and enables us to incorporate emerging techniques in modelling, capital management, and financial reporting.

Many of our lecturers and module contributors are practicing actuaries who bring current, first-hand insight from the workplace directly into the classroom. We also welcome regular guest lectures from industry leaders on topics such as innovation in insurance, evolving regulatory expectations, sustainability in risk management, and future trends in modelling.

Our consulting arm provides a bridge between employers and students, offering structured opportunities to collaborate on live projects — from capital optimisation to pricing analysis — allowing students to apply what they learn in a real commercial context. Through these collaborations, students not only develop their technical skills but also gain exposure to communication, teamwork, and professional standards expected in the workplace.

Professional Alignment

Our curriculum is carefully mapped to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) Core and Specialist syllabuses to ensure technical rigour, professional relevance, and

eligibility for exemptions. Each module is reviewed against IFoA learning outcomes to maintain alignment with global actuarial standards.

We also work closely with UK university partners to deliver academically validated and quality-assured qualifications. These partnerships enable us to offer accredited degrees while providing students access to a student visa route under the partner university’s sponsorship. In parallel, we maintain high academic governance and policy transparency in accordance with OfS and QAA guidelines to ensure we meet expectations for higher education providers in the UK.

Our academic structure incorporates formal assessments, external moderation, and internal quality assurance processes to ensure that learning outcomes are met, and student progression is managed with fairness and academic integrity.

International Reach

Our long-term vision includes establishing physical campuses and consulting hubs in strategically selected international locations, including India, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. These regions represent growing actuarial markets with strong demand for professionally trained actuaries who can address local regulatory and financial challenges. By expanding into these territories, LIAS aims to contribute to global actuarial education, build local partnerships with insurers and universities, and offer regionally relevant training that still adheres to international standards. Each hub will serve as both a learning centre and a consultancy platform, offering students real-world project experience in emerging actuarial markets.

The Consulting Arm

A dedicated unit within LIAS acts as a professional consulting division, working on commissioned projects from insurers, reinsurers, and consulting firms. This unit is staffed by practicing actuaries and supported by student teams, enabling students to contribute to live work in areas such as capital modelling, reserving, pricing analysis, and assumption development. Projects are structured to simulate commercial consulting engagements, with students involved in scoping, delivery, documentation, and presentation of results. These experiences not only deepen technical skills but also provide valuable exposure to client expectations, governance frameworks, and collaborative professional workflows.
